Six-Day Race in Douglas Arizona, June 11—June 17

Veteran ATY runner Gary Cross is hosting his second annual 6-day race in Douglas, Arizona from June 11th until June 17th, 2006. He wants us to know that it's going to be a low key event with very limited aid. Last we heard he has three spots left in the race. To enroll, contact Gary personally at 520-220-0866.

About 2006 Pricing

In light of much recent discussion on the Ultra list about race pricing, the ATY has made some decisions about pricing this year.

First, we want those who are not yet aware that Across the Years gives runners more in return for their race fee than almost any race.

Last year runners received not one, but two Patagonia garments: a beautiful capilene shirt suitable either for running or social occasions (I've worn mine for both, and hang it in the closet rather than folding it in a drawer); and a pricey pullover with an embroidered breast pocket that both the race director and I wore out to the theater the night of January 1st, the day the race ended. (By coincidence we were going to the same play and ran into each other. I'd had three hours sleep. Paul had none.)

We got a generous break on cost from Patagonia, but this stuff is expensive. We also continue to award expensive embroidered jackets to runners who net 1000 miles lifetime. All that in addition to quality food, the heated tent, and other niceties not provided by any other race.

There are cheaper races. Across the Years used to be one of them. You paid your fee, showed up, got a t-shirt, enough to eat and drink, a place to run for up to three days, and a bit more. When ATY moved to Nardini Manor, the ad hoc organizing committee that sprang into existence elected to move in the direction of making the race more professional and providing more features that runners who travel to races from out of state and out to the country like.

At the same time, we recognize that many runners have been loyal to the race over the years, and keep coming back year after year. We want to keep those runners, even the slowest ones. They are our friends, the ATY Family, many of them local to Arizona, and we do not want to price them out of coming.

ATY has been operating at a loss the last few years, despite the generous contributions of certain sponsors.

This year we are providing our own registration service, with custom software written and donated by our webmaster, who provides the web site as a labor of love. Payment will be handled through PayPal. In addition, there is a flat fee for each race, with no break for early registration.

An advantage to this is that ATY will now absorb the cost of registering online, in hopes that most runners will use the online registration system. In the end, participants will be receiving as much as they have gotten used to at our event, at a cost will vary from slightly more to slightly less than last year.

The purpose of this blog

Greetings to everyone. I've just created this blog for Across the Years for the purpose of posting news. You are welcome to add comments to it.

While this channel is basically a public address system, there is also an
Across the Years discussion forum on ATY sponsor ZombieRunner's web site, where you are welcome to engage in free form discussion about the race.
